Project Background

Perthwaste Pty Ltd (Perthwaste) proposes to build a landfill at North Bannister to accept putrescible waste. The site was shortlisted from many after conducting due diligence studies and was found to be the most optimum for landfill use. The proposed location is Lot 2 on Plan 2767 situated 5.5 km west of the Albany Highway, at the rear of the Culford Tree Farm, near North Bannister approximately 30km north of the Shire of Boddington.

 It is proposed that the landfill will have a footprint of 16.6 ha and will have a lifespan of 17 years. This proposal is called the North Bannister Waste Facility.

Environment and Regulatory Approvals Process

To construct a landfill, Perthwaste will need to first acquire the environmental approval to use the site as a landfill from the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). Perthwaste will then apply for a works approval and licence for a prescribed premise through the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC). The Shire of Boddington on the 19th September 2011 approved the use of the site as a Landfill. Environmental management of a landfill is monitored through the site licence approved by the DEC.

Community Consultation

Perthwaste submitted a Environmental Referral Document to the EPA as part of the approvals process. This document describes the environmental factors relevant to the landfill site and includes the reports of various environmental impact assessment surveys. Perthwaste has conducted several environmental studies including flora, fauna, dieback, traffic, ground water, cultural heritage, noise, and social and economic impacts. The EPA advised Perthwaste Pty Ltd on 19th July 2011 of a decision on the Referral Document of – NOT ASSESSED – PUBIC ADVICE GIVEN.

Perthwaste has undertaken Community consultation with various stakeholders and the local community before this document was submitted. Perthwaste advertised the Public Open day and Site visit in local newspapers and our website prior to these events. Perthwaste has encouraged the local residents and other interested groups to participate in the consultation process by attending a public open day and the site visit.
