Our modern Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) was built in 2012 using start-of-art technology to ensure the maximum recovery of recyclables.
  • Materials Recovery Facility
Non-recyclable materials are manually removed to prevent damage to equipment and maximise the value of recyclables recovered.
  • Disc Screen
Disc screens with different sized openings automatically allow different types of recyclables to fall through onto a series of conveyors which move the material around the plant for further sorting.
  • Materials Recovery Facility - Newspaper
Screens pull cardboard, newspaper and mixed paper onto three separate sorting lines for manual quality control.
  • Eddy Current
A magnetic field is used to create an “eddy current” in aluminium cans in order to extract them.
  • Materials Recovery Facility - Plastics
MRF machinery recovers mixed plastics which are manually sorted at the final stage of the process.
  • Cardboard Bale
Cardboard is baled and sent for reprocessing into new products.
  • Crushed Cans
Aluminium is baled and sent for reprocessing into new products.
  • Plastic Bale

Materials Recovery Facility (Bibra Lake)

Located at the Perth Operations Centre, the Perthwaste Materials Recovery Facility receives household and commercial recycling from across Perth and south-west WA.

Our modern recycling centre was built using state-of-art technology to ensure the maximum recovery of recyclables. The MRF can process up to 30 tonnes per hour - that is equivalent to four full recycling trucks.

The Recycling Centre accepts ‘mixed recycling’ (i.e. mixed plastic and cardboard containers, cans and bottles). That makes recycling easier for everyone, as recyclables don’t need to be separated for collection.

Collection trucks bring recyclables to our recycling centre in Bibra Lake, 20km south of the Perth CBD. The recyclables are unloaded into an area called the “tipping floor”.

From the tipping floor, recycling is placed onto a conveyor belt to commence processing. Recycling is then sorted by MRF machinery or by hand into “material streams” of:

  • Glass
  • Newspaper
  • Mixed paper
  • Cardboard
  • Steel
  • PET plastic
  • HDPE plastic
  • Aluminium cans

Once separated, the different streams are baled (except glass) and sent for remanufacturing into new products.

Material not recovered in the Materials Recovery Facility is transferred to the C&I Materials Recovery Facility (see below) where mixed plastics are recovered.

Non recyclables are then transferred to our Waste Transfer Station for disposal at our Landfill.

C&I Materials Recovery Facility (Bibra Lake)

Located at the Perth Operations Centre, the Perthwaste Commercial & Industrial (C&I) Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) sorts general waste collected from businesses in the Perth metropolitan area.

Commerical & industrial waste consists of a wide variety of packaging and production wastes, including cardboard, timber, steel, aluminium and plastics. Our modern C&I Recycling Centre was built in 2015 and recovers these valuable materials from the general waste stream; diverting them from landfill.

The C&I Recycling Centre can process up to 25 tonnes per hour.

Collection trucks bring waste to the C&I Recycling Centre where it is unloaded into an area called the “tipping floor”. From the tipping floor, waste is placed onto a conveyor belt to commence processing. Recyclable material is recovered by-hand and dropped into a series of storage bunkers for:

  • Cardboard
  • Timber
  • Steel
  • Aluminium
  • Mixed plastic

Once separated, the different streams are baled (except timber and steel) and sent for remanufacturing into new products.

Non recyclables are transferred to our Waste Transfer Station for disposal at our Landfill.
