What happens to your recycling?
After your recycling bin is emptied, collection trucks bring recyclables to the Perthwaste Materials Recovery Facility. At the Recycling Centre, the recyclables are unloaded into an area called the “tipping floor”.
From the tipping floor, recyclables are placed onto a conveyor belt to commence processing. Recyclables are then sorted by MRF machinery or by hand into “material streams” of:
- Aluminium cans
Once separated, the different streams are baled (except glass) and sent for remanufacturing into new products.
What happens to your green waste?
After you green waste bin is emptied, collection trucks bring green waste to the Perthwaste Organics Transfer Station in Bibra Lake. Non-compostable materials (contaminants) are manually removed to maximise the final composts quality.
Cleaned organics are then transported in heavy haulage trucks to the Perthwaste North Bannister Resource Recovery Facility for composting.
The composting process takes 12 weeks.
Once processed, the composted products are used in landscaping and agriculture to reduce water loss and add valuable carbon and nutrients to soils.
